2022-2023 8th Grade Future Readiness Parent Meeting and Activities Fair

Seventh grade parents and students please plan to attend the 8th Grade Future Readiness Meeting and Activities Fair on Monday, February 28th at Southview Middle School.  School counselors and principals will present information about course options, what your child’s potential schedule could look like, and what to expect for the upcoming school year.

The Activities Fair will introduce our future 8th grade students to the activities, clubs and sports Southview offers at the 8th grade level.

Black History Month Challenge

Calling all students ages 13-18!

Principal Financial Group‘s Principal Foundation is sponsoring The Black History Month Challenge, a scholarship essay contest open to all students ages 13-18.
The Black History Month Challenge celebrates some of those “lesser-known” moments and facts in Black history, and inspires enduring conversations about race and allyship among young people today.
The contest is open February 1-28 and the following prizes will be awarded:
  • First Place: $3,500 scholarship
  • Second Place: $1,000 scholarship
  • Third Place: $500 scholarship

Scholastic Art and Writing Winners

Several students from the Ankeny Community School District were recognized by the Scholastic Art and Writing contest during the month of January. Their work was blindly adjudicated by a panel of creative professionals and recognized as the most outstanding work submitted among their peers.

Scholastic Art and Writing is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12. Our students will be honored at an online celebration in March sponsored by Belin-Blank at the University of Iowa.

Our two students with Gold Key honors are automatically considered for national awards.

World Read Aloud Day – Feb. 2

World Read Aloud Day is Wednesday, February 2, 2022! For 13 years, World Read Aloud Day has called attention to the importance of sharing stories by challenging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read-aloud! The global effort, created by the non-profit LitWorld and sponsored by Scholastic, is celebrated annually in over 173 countries and is all about bringing people together through the shared connection of reading aloud in all of our communities.

Congratulations to Kristen Recher, Iowa STEM Teacher Award

5th grade teachers receives STEM award
Congratulations to Northeast Elementary fifth grade teacher, Kristen Recher who was honored January 24 as the 2022 Iowa STEM Teacher Award recipient for the South Central Region of Iowa.
It is Kristen’s commitment to incorporating STEM activities into her curriculum, as well as her passion toward continued professional development around STEM learning that earned her this honor.

Attendance Reminder

Please contact the school if your child will be absent from school, arriving late or leaving early. You can find all school contact information on Our District webpage. Another option is to send an email to your school front office secretary along with your student’s teacher.
We do have to have the reason why a student is not in school. Please include any symptoms they be having, not feeling well is not enough detail this year. If the school is not notified of an absence, the office will attempt to contact the Parents/Guardians at their primary number listed on Infinite Campus.

68 Students Selected for the 35th Annual OPUS Honor Choir Festival

This fall, sixty-eight Ankeny Community School District students, grades sixth through ninth, were selected for the 35th Annual Opus Honor Choir Festival hosted by the Iowa Choral Directors Association. Over twenty-one hundred students were nominated by their directors for one hundred-eighty positions in each of the four OPUS Honor Choirs. Judges made their selections by scoring a recorded audition from each nominated student. The 2021 Opus Honor Choirs performed on Thursday, November 18th, in CY Stephens Auditorium in Ames. Congratulations to these outstanding young musicians and their directors: Nick Oswald and Jill Bjorklund, Southview; Ben Joseph, Northview; David Sponder and Emma Feldhans, Parkview; Riley Anderson and Lisa Rehms, Prairie Ridge.

CONGRATULATIONS to the hundreds of Ankeny students who submitted recordings and especially to each of these fine young musicians who were selected! Prairie Ridge students Taylor Harrison and Ezekiel Scroggs, Parkview student Logan Peterson and Southview student Evelyn Huegel had the distinguished honor of being chosen as solo finalists for the festival, and Logan Peterson was chosen as a soloist! Congratulations to all!

Holly Anderson Named 2022 Middle School Iowa Athletic Director of the Year

Holly Anderson, Activities Director at Northview Middle School, has been chosen as the 2022 Middle School Athletic Director of the Year by the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association. Holly was chosen for her outstanding dedication and leadership of young student-athletes.

“We are excited that Holly is receiving this much deserved recognition,” said Dr. Erick Pruitt, Superintendent of Ankeny Schools. “She is great leader, to both her students and also to her fellow staff members.”

Holly has been with the Ankeny Community School District for 16 years. Her previous roles for the district include P.E. teacher and girl’s basketball coach before beginning her current role in administration in 2013.

Honorees chosen as Athletic Director of the Year must have a minimum of five years’ experience and show qualities of achievement, excellence and character. Holly will be recognized at the annual IHSADA State Convention in March.
